Kent Tidbits
Kent is the 6th biggest city in Washington and it is located at the center of Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. Being part of the King county, Kent is near major cities of the state such as Seattle and Tacoma, and Kent is merely 19 miles away from these cities.
From Kent, Seattle and Tacoma are accessible through the available options: the two freeways, the city streets, the Sounder commuter rail, and soon, the Link light rail, which is expected to be operation in 2024. In 2010, the Census Bureau counted a total of 92,411 residents living in Kent. On July 1, 2018, the population went up to 129,618, and this is mainly because of the expected population growth and the city's further expansion.
Looking back to the city's history, European Americans discovered the area during the 1820s. It was Samuel Russell who became the first resident of the area. He ventured out to the White and Duwamish rivers, and by 1835, Russell claimed a piece of land. After that, other settlers came and built humble abodes near the riverbanks.
Because of the area's proximity to the White River, the residents decided to call their town "White River." However, it was changed "Titusville" later on as a way to commemorate James Henry Titus, who was one of the town's earliest resident. Even today, Kent continues to honor James Henry Titus and the "Titusville Station" remains to be one of the noticeable signs on Gowe Street.
By the end of 1870, the population of Titusville was 277, and the residents mainly relied on grains as their source of income. During the 1860s and 1860, people in the valley managed to get by planting wheat, hay, oats, barley, and other crops. Titusville's farming industry even became bigger when cities in Europe started to acquire hops from them. In facts, tons of hops were sent to outside the Puget Sound region.
In 1889, Titusville became Kent due to the European influence. The town's new name came from a county of the same name, which is known for hops production. However, the hops production halted in 1916 when stormed the crops in Kent.
Despite only having 793 residents, Kent officially became a city on May 28, 1890. Within King County, Kent became the second place to be incorporated as a city right after Seattle. The new developments also meant new businesses for the city, and dairy farming was its latest venture.
During this time, Kent served as a manufacturing plant for the popular brand of condensed milk, Carnation. Before it was acquired by Nestle, Elbridge Amos Stuart, the creator of Carnation, together with his business associate started The Pacific Coast Condensed Milk Company in Kent.
From 1953 to 1960, Kent continued to progress and the city expanded 12 times bigger than its original size. However, frequent flooding from the Green River continued to hamper the city's progress, and Kent had to take action by the completion of the Howard A. Hanson Dam in 1962.
Today, Kent is not only known for hops and dairy, but it soon became the "Lettuce Capital of the World."
Other companies decided to move to Kent including the aerospace company Boeing. In order to preserve the city's rich past, the Greater Kent Historical Society was established.
