Gig Harbor Tidbits
Discovered in 1840 and officially recognized as a city in 1946, Gig Harbor is a small but absolutely scenic city in the state of Washington. The city is a popular tourist destination because it has a close and easy access to nearby state and city parks and its iconic waterfront is filled with diverse shops and restaurants.
June, July, August, and September are the most comfortable months of the year to visit Gig Harbor. The average temperature falls between 68 degrees Fahrenheit to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. July is the driest and warmest month with an average maximum temperature of 73 degrees Fahrenheit whereas December is the coldest and wettest month of the year, with an average maximum temperature of 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
Long before becoming the Gig Harbor we know today, the city has a long and rich history. The name "Gig Harbor" was associated to the time when Captain Charles Wilkes experienced a heavy storm during his expedition. He was aboard a small boat named captain's gig and decided to dock into the harbor for shelter.
Later on, he called the area as Gig Harbor and included it in the publication of the Wilkes 1841 Map. It was not until 1867 when three fishermen arrived and claimed the land as their newfound home. Over the years, Gig Harbor turned into a thriving fishing village. Aside from fishing, the incorporation of lumber mills and boatbuilding yards in the area also gave the people several job opportunities.
Gig Harbor was then separated into two business districts. At the head of the bay was the north side business district while the other one was in the west side of the harbor. Due to the development of these two downtown districts, the residential growth became prevalent within these areas.
The one thing that sets Gig Harbor apart from a usual small American town was that the people got around the area through a boat and not a car. Though things may have changed a lot now, the city of Gig Harbor has carefully preserved its history.
If you are in the area, you might want to look for Heritage Markers installed by the local government. These markers are beautifully crafted with photographs that provide historical information about the interesting sites you come across with.
If your favorite summer pastime is music, try to visit the Skanskie Brothers Park situated at 3207 Harborview Drive. It is a 2.59 acre park where summer concert series and many other community events take place. Make sure to visit the Skanskie Brothers Park if you want to take some time off and just feel the fresh air.
A trip to Gig Harbor would not be complete without visiting the beautiful waterfront. One place that has a great waterfront view is the Austin Estuary located at 4009 Harborview Drive. This place is a distinguished waterfront park with 1.38 acres of developed uplands and 7.07 acres of open space tidelands. This used to be the location of Austin Mill but ever since the city's acquisition of the area, it is now widely known as the Austin Estuary. Gig Harbor continues to enjoy being "The Maritime City" on Puget Sound.
