Located on the northern region of Pierce County is a city called Ruston. It was only during the latter part of 2012 when Ruston was reclassified as a city. According to the Census Bureau, in 2010, Ruston had a total population of 749 people.
Because Tacoma is nearby Ruston, there is always that constant comparison between the two cities. Even if Ruston is merely a dot compared to the adjacent city, you would be surprised that Ruston actually has a lot to offer. Before listing the places to see, let's go down memory lane and discuss the history of Ruston before it became a city.
Ruston is the northern neighbor of Tacoma. One cannot not mention Tacoma when discussing the origins of Ruston. It used to be a company town during the 1800s because the area was known as a mining and smelting town. Eventually, the town got nearer and nearer to the Tide Flats of Tacoma.
In 1888, Denis Ryan decided to build a smelter on the northern portion of Tacoma. So, he designated William Rust, a.k.a W.R. Rust, to manage what eventually became the Tacoma Smelting & Refining Company. By 1890, Mr. Rust purchased the entire property from Denis Ryan. William Rust did a very good job in running the business that the residents of company town wanted to rename the town Ruston in a way to honor his legacy.
Soon, W.R. Rust had to let go of his business, and he sold the smelter to the Guggenheim Brothers. The new owners renamed it to American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO). ASARCO continued dominate until the 1900s, and it was of the companies that powered the town economically. Unfortunately, the smelter ceased operations by the late 1985s.
The former ASARCO plant, which stood 571 feet tall, suffered from stack rupture. The implosion happened on January 17, 1993. There was a massive cleanup afterwards to remove the remnants of the smelting plant. Eventually, the area was changed to "Point Ruston," which features residential houses and commercial hubs.
This was the proposal of Ruston in order to add more than 1,000 residents to the city. Then, 2012, the city council filed the necessary documents to reclassify Ruston. Under Washington law, Ruston became a noncharter code city. The city officials reiterated that it would retain the "Town of Ruston" tag.
According to the Vintage 2019 Population Estimates, there were 845 people residing in Ruston. 95.7 percent of its residents have graduated high school or have earned a higher educational attainment. From 2014 to 2018, the reported median income per household was $ 90,250.
In Point Ruston, you will find homes that will give you a custom view of the Pacific Northwest setting. Moreover, there is a waterfront hotel and an urban village for you to stay in. This side of Ruston will allow you to play, relax, and enjoy the moment.
