Seatac Tidbits
SeaTac got its name from two cities: Seattle and Tacoma. It is considered a suburban city and provides a residential area for most of the residents of Seattle. The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport are within the city's limits, which is roughly 3 square miles. The airport is not owned by SeaTac, but the Port of Seattle handles its operations.
Back then, SeaTac, Burien, Tukwila, and Des Moines were part of the Highline area, and the US government used it as a military road to help American troops to traverse Fort Steilacoom and Fort Bellingham during the 1860s. These men would tirelessly pass through what is now known as present-day SeaTac.
Mike and Jane Kelly decided to get married, and the couple claimed a piece of land and named it Sunnydale. In 1872, the Kellys also were granted the permission to build a road between their land and a farming community near the Duwamish River, which now the current location of South Park.
With the support of his family, Mike Kelly was able to build the Kelly Road. Near the newly built road, they were able to move to their cabin. This humble abode would become the first school in SeaTac. Jane Kelly would be the teacher and she would tutor her kids and their neighbor's kids.
When Laif Hamilton bought the Kelly homestead, the Kelly Road was asphalted with red bricks. Since the road became slippery during rainy days, it was known as "Hamilton's Folly". In 1922, the highway was renamed to Des Moines Memorial Drive. American elm trees were added along the newly renovated memorial highway.
During the 1890s, Albert Paul and Gardner Clark built a 160-acre estate and planted hops. By the beginning of the 20th century, the George Wilcox family moved to the land where the North Satellite of the Sea-Tac Airport now stands. George's family managed the first blacksmith shop in the area.
Many years has paased, and SeaTac was able to developed roadways like the International Boulevard. Then, the SeaTac Community Center was created. Improvements included the addition of more city parks, school playgrounds, and other amenities to make the residents' lives comfortable.
Upgrades were also made in the police, fire, and animal control services. As part to enhance the city, SeaTac purchased a city hall and established a maintenance facility. SeaTac continued to finance human agencies to help the residents.
Today, SeaTac operates under the Council-Manager form of governance. The residents would vote for the seven council members, and the elected city council will select one city manager. In 2004, when the quick and convenient means of transportation reached SeaTac, it was like Mike Kelly's vision back then when he created the Kelly Road.
When the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport expressed its interest in creating a third runway, SeaTac refused to join its geographic neighbors in rejecting the proposal, which was accepted in 1996.
The following year, SeaTac negotiated an agreement with the Port of Seattle. Today, through the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, SeaTac enjoys the perks of being close to Seattle and other parts of the world.
